The 2004 Ford Escape does not have a serviceable transmission filter but instead has a small screen built into the transmission for catching debris. Changing out this screen would require dismantling either part of the transmission or the entire thing. A transmission fluid filter will be able to collect metal flaking that occurs due to metal parts coming in contact with one another thus keeping it out of the fluid itself. At times, the filter can become clogged. You will know You are dealing with a clog if You have symptoms such as rattling whirring or whining when shifting into gear, leaks, or a burning smell. You may also run into trouble with gear slippage. Another symptom that shouldn't be ignored is if Your car is making noises specifically while in neutral.

There is no real transmission filter that you can change in the 2004 ford escape, though you can change the fluid.
