To check the charging system on a Ford Explorer there are a few things that You can do. First thing You should do is us a multimeter to check the battery after it has sat overnight. It should be resting above 12 volts, somewhere around 12.4 volts would be ideal. If it is below that then there is a sign that the battery is not charging properly, or the cells are bad and not holding a charge. The next thing to check is the voltage when the vehicle is running. It should be around 14.4 volts, if it is higher or lower that could mean there's a bad voltage regulator on Your alternator. There are also speciality tools that can put a load on Your alternator to see how well it preforms.

If the check charging system goes on in your ford explorer, the charging voltage may not be sufficient.

If the check charging system indicator light comes on, it may mean that your battery terminal many need to be cleaned or you may need a new battery.
