The Ford Explorer's auto 4WD cannot be switched off unless You are willing to modify wiring in the transfer case. The auto button is engaged by data collected from the Explorer's ABS sensors and other sources that includes steering wheel angle, pedal position, turning, wheel speeds and rates of acceleration. The system decides how much power to move between the four wheels, moving from a 2WD to A4WD drivetrain almost instantaneously when sensing unsafe road conditions or slippage. The Explorer's other two options can be switched off and on and include 4WD High and 4WD low. High settings should only be used in deep snow, mud or sand. Low settings are appropriate for steep climbing or gravELRoads, but both options should be engaged with caution as they put tremendous strain on the transfer case when used improperly.

Some ford auto 4wd ford explorers will allow you to disable the function by disconnecting the brown fire that leads into the transfer case. This action will default the vehicle to rear, two wheel drive.
