The procedure for resetting the security system on the 2001 Toyota 4Runner is the same as it was for the year 2000 ones. A bit of background, if You're unfamiliar with how Your Toy's anti-theft system functions, is that it's tied to the power lock system. When You hit the power lock on the doors using Your keyless entry remote device, the alarms turn on. If You change the battery in the car, the system becomes disabled and requires the reset. Happily, it's pretty simple. Put the physical key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. Then, locate the valet switch near the hood release, which is going to be on Your (driver's side) of the dash. Turn that switch on and off three times quickly. You should hear a short chirping sound coming from the alarm system at this point. Next, press and hold the unlock/lock button on the key fob. You'll be listening for one long beep; when You hear that, release the buttons. Now, once again toggle that valet switch on and off quickly. Turn the key in the ignition to the "off" position and take it out. Lock the doors using the remote to verify the system has been properly reset and You're done!
