The all wheel drive system in a Chevy Equinox works by using a high range transfer case located in the vehicle to send power to the rear wheels when You select it or when there is a traction control problem. The all wheel drive system is designed to be used in the snow or situations when there is low traction, the rest of the time the vehicle primarily uses front wheel drive. When Your traction control system in Your Equinox detects a problem it may also engage the all wheel drive system to send extra power to the rear wheels so that the front wheels do not slip and lose as much traction while You are accelerating hard.

All-wheel drive in a chevy equinox is designed to adjust traction control when it engages. This transfers power to the wheels that happen to be slipping to help gain control.

To Miriam R. Not quite. It transfer power to the wheels that are NOT slipping.
