The 2005 Ford Escape has a total of three catalytic converters. Two of them are located on the exhaust manifolds while the third is in front of the muffler. Each of these help to control the emissions from the car. If the converters are failing to do their job You may run into problems such as a slow engine and eventual shut down. This can be caused by contamination from leaded gasoline, clogging due to a coolant leak, overheating, and/or physical damage. You may also notice dark smoke from the exhaust or even a rotten egg smell. Due to the materials from which they are made, catalytic converters are a high theft item. If Yours is missing You may notice a loud roaring sound upon startup or it may not start at all. You will also notice lack of acceleration when pressing the gas pedal and a drop in fuel efficiency.
