The amount of transmission fluid in quarts that the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 uses iS4 quarts for the 5-speed manual and 13.5 quarts for a total fill or 7.7 quarts for an initial fill for the 4-speed automatic. The type of fluid that should be used is Dexron VI for the 4-speed automatic and Synthetic gear oil, GM P/N 12346190 or equivalent for the 5-speed manual. Transmission fluid is both an oil and a hydraulic fluid that helps with gear shifts, helps to cool the transmission and helps to lubricate moving parts. You should change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles or so. The cost of a fluid change if taken to a mechanic is anywhere from $170 to $220 in labor costs.
