To change the transmission fluid in a 2002 Ford Explorer, watch: https://www.Youtube.com/watch?v=bOgs_zbzA5I The transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Along with fluid changes, terrible sounds will come from the transmission. Old transmission fluid will be awful to the ear. A worn out torque converter will cause a headache. The transmission is one of the most critical parts of the vehicle. You will face issues at some point. If the transmission fluid leaks, that needs to be solved quickly. Delayed shifts can cause acceleration issues. The transmission may slip. You might experience shudders. Hard shifts may arise and that is no good. There could be jerking. The gears can become stuck.

Start by lifting the vehicle with ramps or a jack support. Open the hood of the car by pressing the latch on the drivers side, and then pulling the latch under the hood. Find the skid plate underneath the car, it should be in the center. Remove all the screws and move the skid plate forward to remove it. Put a container down to catch the oil for this next part. Loosen the drain plug volts, once it is removed oil will immediately pour out. Wait for the oil to drain before pulling out the drain plug. Remove the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise, as you're doing this some oil will most likely dribble. Clean the oil filter gasket surface on the engine thoroughly. Prepare the new oil filter, by pre-filing it with oil and rubbing some onto the oil gasket, then screw in the new filter. Funnel the oil into the engine, check the oil on the dipstick, check under the car for leaks, and then put everything back together.
