Park Your 2004 Ford Explorer on a flat surface, and then let the vehicle cool down. Unlike some engines, the Ford should be off versus running for its tranny. Pop the hood to Your engine using the hood-release lever under Your dash panel near the steering wheel. You can then locate the transmission dipstick in the engine. Pull that straight up and wipe it off with a rag. Stick it back in the tube and pull it out again. Yes, sometimes working on a vehicle is like doing other activities. Look at the transmission level on the metal stick and verify it's between the min and max lines engraved on it. If it's below the MINImum, You'll need to add haLFA quart at a time, into the tube You removed the check stick from, using a funnel.

To check the transmission fluid on a 2004 ford explorer you will need to take these steps: locate the transmission pan and you will see a large bolt. There is another smaller plug requiring a torx socket inside this larger bolt. With the vehicle running in park, the plug is removed. If fluid barely runs out , the level is good. If no fluid runs out , fluid needs to be added

You need a special tool and pump to check the transmission fluid and can not use the traditional dipstick.

There is no transmission fluid dipstick on generation 3 ford explorers. Remove theT33 screw inside drain plug as written above.
