Look on the gear shift. There is a button with AWD on it. Hit this and You will be in 4 wheel drive.

2005 Mazda Tribute is AWD not 4x4, therefore it is always on, the button on the gear selector is to turn overdrive on or off.

There is a button on the gear shift labeled awd, hit that and it will be in 4 wheel drive.
