When Your battery is dead and You need to put Your Focus in neutral, slot in Your key and set the car to ACC. Then, focus on the brake and be sure to depress it completely. When doing so, also shift the selector to neutral. This should put Your Focus in neutral, and will be very easy to do so if the battery has died. If that doesnt work, there is another method You can try. Locate the manual shift compartment in the vehicle, and make sure to consult Your ownership manual if Youre having difficulties finding it. Then, pry open this compartment and press into the hole that comes exposed after doing so. This should force Your car to be set to neutral.

Put the parking brake on, put on the ignition switch and press the brake pedal. Now you can shift to neutral

I have the same problem. A dead battery means you can't move the gear lever out of Park to be able to tow it.

Chock your wheels or use the ebrake.. Get underneath the car and unclip the shift linkage. Pop the shift linkage off and manually set the transmission in neutral..... I had to do this and i was searching for solutions just like you guys... The vehicle was a 2009 ford focus se model with im guessing the 1.8 engine configuration

The solution is to burnyour focus s**t and run it off cliff and sew Ford motor company and file for insurance and buy a Toyota Lexus. American made goods about as good as Taiwan. Other words f**k US and its' poorly made goods.
