To remove the 2002 Ford Explorer's rear hatch panel, place duck tape across the bottom of the panel to prevent scratching. Remove the oval "Ford Emblem" by warming with a heat gun. Using a flat scraping tool and rubber hammer, gently lift up the sides of the existing panel by placing the scraper in between the vehicle's frame and the metal sheet. Tap the tool with a hammer to help release the hatch cover. Tap gently and sideways, never pointing the hammer downwards to prevent damage. The rear hatch glass underneath can be broken if bumped or tapped too hard. When finished, employ a razor blade and rag to wipe off any remaining adhesive.

To remove the rear hatch panel, first remove the pins from top of hatch. Then remove all screws and pop out plastic piece attached to lock indicator. After doing so, you can remove the panel.

Begin by removing the plastic pins at the top of the hatch. Remove the two screws retaining the pull strap and then pry out the plastic sheath from the lock indicator. Now the entire panel should be free and able to be pried off.
