It's actually quite simple to remove and replace the tail lights in the Toyota Matrix, thanks to some trim panels that Toyota has conveniently installed in order to give You access. To begin, You'll need to remove the trim panel at the rear of the hatch, held in place by a tab. Once You have access, there are three bolts that hold the tail light housing in place. Use a socket or a ratcheting wrench to remove the three nuts from the three mounting bolts. On most model years, I believe they're 10mm. Once these are off, You should be able to gently pry the tail light housing from the body of the car. Remember to remove the electrical connectors first, so that You don't damage them in the process.

To remove toyota matrix tail lights, remove the two screws with phillips screwdriver that keep the tail light. Twist the tail light bulb and plug to the left and detach the tail light assembly from the back.
