The HCU or Hydraulic Control Unit in Your 2008 Ford Escape is the brain of Your brake system. It controls the ABS system and other parts that allow Your vehicle to safely stop in different situations. The HCU in the Escape and other Fords from that same time frame have a history of going bad. If this happens to Yours You will need to find a replacement and have a service center install it. If You have the dealership do it You are looking at an estimate of around $5,000 but You can find the part online for much cheaper and just have them do the install. They need to do it because the new unit will need to be progRammed by the proprietary software that Ford has. The entire brake system will also need to be bled before it will function properly .
