The Ford Escape trunk light may stay on if the power liftgate isn't actually latching upon closing and therefore not locking and signaling to the car that the hatch is still open. You may need to replace the lock actuator or realign the liftgate. If the former, the estimated cost is $60 to $80 for labor and $220 to $230 for parts. For the latter, a technical service bulletin was issued in May of 2018 regarding this issue and the 2017 model year, specifically vehicles that were built before September 1, 2017. According to steps outlined in the bulletin You will need to adjust the striker wings and reinstall the striker bumpers using Torx T25, a ratchet, adjustable wrench, and vernier caliper. The article number is 18-2135.

Locate the light switch for the rear door, remove it, it should just be a push in type of switch, then unplug it and tape up the wire, that should cancel the rear lights, then just put the switch back in the hole.
