The neutral safety switch on a transmission is located on the side of the transmission housing. It is used to determine whether Your vehicle is in park or neutral because that is the only time that Your engine can start up safely. If Your car is in gear then it could damage the transmission to run the starter motor for the car. That is why there is a neutral safety switch that will only allow the starter to run either in park or neutral. If Your switch is failing then You may need to be in neutral to start the car instead of park. I recommend replacing the switch if You notice that it is going bad.
