If Your Toyota Highlander power rear door is not working, put the rear hatch in off mode via glove compartment button(off is with the button in out position). Open hatch manually all the way. With the hatch opened fully, press and hold the rear latch button until You hear 4 quick beeps. Place hatchback in on position via the glove compartment button. Attempt to open hatch with fob, rear liftgate button, or front dash button. Many owners have reported having the power rear door not to work and tried this procedure with great success. Although not as common, some owners have reported that the liftgate became stuck in the open position after the vehicles power lift arm broke off the gate and caused the driver-side hinge to bow.

It did not work for me. I have a toyota Highlander 2017 with smart key entry. Battery drained . Car was re-started with jumper cables the re-charged. Lift gate refuses to open electronically. I can open it mechanically. I tried to reset it by keeping the opening button pressed until the 4 beeps followed by single beep. I also tried to turn off the lift button in the glove compartment, open the gate mechanically, press the button until the 4 beeps plus the single beep, then turn the button on in the glove compartment. Nada, the electronic opening and closing mechanism does not work. What do I do next?

We just had this issue. Turns out the back glass was open and then the door didn't want to open or close.

I can not make the door do the 4 beeps, I've tried everything, but still nothing, the rear switch when pressed does not make any sound at all, regardless if glove box switch is on or off, door open or close, the rear switch at the door does not make any sound and the other switches or control key make the long beep sound but door does not open or close, is there a fuse that sends power to the switch at the door?

2014 Highlander back hatch unlocks but will not open. It will not open manually either. Do I need to force in open, it appears that the right Actuator will not extend to the open Position.

2013 Highlander Hybrid, no matter how long you hold down the button you only get 2 beeps, you never get 4 beeps. Cannot open via key FOB, or button on drivers side. Cannot close via button on back hatch. Any thoughts??

Only had to find the button in the glovebox and push it in ("on"). Touched the auto button to open the lift gate and it worked perfectly.i guess I had somehow deactivated the button while rummaging in the glovebox. 2019 Highlander Limited

Press and hold the rear liftgate close-button until it beeps 4 times with the liftgate open and not moving (button is located on the rear liftgate door jamb, and only accessible when the liftgate is open). Keep holding until it's beeping again, then let go. The lift gate is locked.

Try manually closing the back lift gate again after the reset and THEN opening and closing the window hatch. That finally was what worked for me.

The reset did work at all. My 2019 highlander my rear door is not opening, when I push the button on the door it just makes a really long beep and pops open so I manually open it. It will not open automatically. What can I do?

Call me stupid if you wish but finding the button in the glove box is the hardest thing about solving this problem. Look just to the left of the inside compartment (along the inside left edge) and you'll find the button tucked away in the upper left corner. Hard to describe so see page 130 in the owner's manual (2016 Highlander) for a diagram of where the button is located. Solved the problem of the back hatch not working.

Same issue after 1st battery replacement. Tried everything above. Sue Skinner's trick worked for me. Manually closed lift gate and opened and closed window hatch.... Problem solved. Thanks Sue.

Apparently you can open a back window separately. If it is not closed completely the liftgate will not open

Found the button in the glove box. Pressed it. The tail gate magically started working. I recently had the car serviced and the service included replacing the cabin filter. The tech must have pressed the button in the glove box when replacing the cabin filter.

2019 highlander. None of these solutions worked. I reset the button, tried flipping the inside trunk lever, pushed the the button o the tailgate, hear the 4 beeps , then 2. Now I just hear a 5 second beep when pressing my key or the dashboard button.

My second Highlander now and the same issue. I have tried all your suggestions with no success. You would think it a safety hazard to not be able to open the door with a manual handle as aback up option.

Sue Skinner's solution worked. Manually close (takes some force), and door closer will automatically latch it. Then, in my case, I pressed firmly on the back window glass until it also automatically latched. Then power opener works. I still need to adjust how far the door opens, but that'll be easy.

Thanks, it took awhile but I fixed it. My friend had put a bike rack on temporarily so we could deliver 6 bikes. I think he knocked the window open too. Didn’t notice at first that windie was cracked open. So it took a couple tries. Thanks so much!!!!

I had no idea there was a button in the glove box. I had brought my car in to get an oil change and a few other minor things done. The next day , the rear door was not working. Someone had pushed the Button so that it was in the off position. When I pushed it on, it worked. Thanks for info.

This happened to my 2015 Highlander after returning from standard maintenance. It was only the switch in glove box (which is on left side, BTW) turned off. Tech probably bumped it when checking the cabin air filter? Thanks for this website!

Glove box button on the inside worked! Press in for on and if it's pushed out that means the button is off.

Your Toyota Highlander rear hatch won’t open from either the key fob, the lift gate switch inside the car or from the release button on the hatch itself. You hear 2 beeps but nothing happens. The 2 beeps is the indication something is not right. Here’s 3 things to try. First, make sure the rear window is completely closed. The hatch will not operate if it’s not. Second, open the rear hatch manually. Press and hold the switch on the tailgate itself. You should hear 2 beeps followed by 4 beeps a short pause and then 2 more beeps. Release the button. Press again to see if hatch reset. Still not working. The third try. Open your glove compartment. On the extreme left side, not in the box itself but to the left of that you’ll see a smal button. Press that for a second and release. That should do it. If none of these resets work you’ll need to bring it into the shop.

2015 Toyota Highlander with electric everything. Rear lift door does not respond to ANY of the above solutions. All I get is two LONG beeps and - nothing. The button in the glove compartment does not do anything. It will push in, but pop right back out with no indication of OFF or ON. No matter what, I get two long beeps and that's it.

I have a 2017 highlander and I kind of diy it. I press the Manuel button ( located inside on the glove box to the left) and raise the trunk door on my own.. Then I clean the tracks and put WD-40 on the joints.. Then press the trunk button (held it for 4 seconds) and reset it from the trunk

Disconnect the positive side battery terminal. Reconnect after 10 minutes. This will reboot the Power Back Door in some cases.Certainly worth a try when the idea buckets dry.

It’s working now for me, I was trying so many times and I gave up. I used it manually for almost 4 months. It was my mistake tho because when I changed the air filters I pressed the button near the glove box but I didn’t notice so thank you it was very helpful.

Try manually close the door, press that button in, in that GC, and open it with the trunk door button on your key.
