The Ford PCM or "power control module" is responsible for managing the key operating components of a vehicle. This includes engine and transmission functions. Occasionally an owner might want to clear codes associated with the PCM or "relearn" or reset the PCM's memory. It is possible to plan a visit to a certified dealership for this procedure because it generally involves the use of expensive diagnostic equipment and an OBDII scanner. However, if You want to try a simpler but effective approach from home, use the Ford Ranger's battery to clear up Your PCM. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 15 minutes before re-connecting. Start the car and drive at various RPM's and speeds to "relearn" the power control module. Some use this technique in conjunction with an OBDII scanner.

To reset the pcm memory on a ford ranger you will need to disconnect the negative battery terminal and allow the battery terminal to be disconnected for at least 20 minutes, then reattach the cable and start the vehicle.
