Usually if You hear a clicking noise coming from Your Ford Explorer even when it has not been driven recently it is a solenoid. There are various valves and solenoids in Your engine compartment that will open and close even when the vehicle is not running. If You notice that the noise is present even after not being driven for days then that can indicate a problem with one of the solenoids. You will want to get that inspected by a dealership to make sure that there are not any computer problems that are causing it to activate randomly. This could drain Your battery over time and prevent You from being able to start up Your car.
