There are two main sources of transmission problems for a 2003 Cadillac Escalade. There are mechanical problems and computer problems that can come up and each of them will exhibit different symptoms that can make it clear what the problem is. The first type of problem that happens are mechanical ones. These usually include excessive noise from the transmission as well as grinding while shifting gears. Also if You lose a gear completely that is usually caused by a mechanical problem. When there are computer problems with the transmission You will usually notice that it shifts slowly between gears and it may feel like it is hunting for a gear. Typically when there are computer problems You can scan Your ECU and check it for any codes.

If the 2003 cadillac escalade is having issues with the transmission then you will notice several problems, including shaking or grinding while driving, a burning smell when the vehicle is on, the gears slipping when you shift, the shifter becoming stuck or non responsive, and leaking fluids. This can all lead to a transmission failure which will more or less kill the vehicle.
