The most common 2006 Chevy Silverado gas gauge problems are usually caused by a problem with the fuel sending unit. This is located in the gas tank and it has the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and the fuel level sensor on it. When this starts to fail it will not report the right amount of fuel to the ECU to be displayed on the gauge. Another reason Your gas gauge may not work is if the ECU has an error and is not outputting the information to the gauge. This can be caused by wiring damage or software damage in the computer. I recommend You use an OBD II scan tool to check Your ECU if You have any problems with Your gas gauge.

To reset the fuel gauge on the 2006 Chevy silverado you need to hit the odo/trip button, then turn the vehicle off. Hold the button and turn it back on and make sure it says it is in odo/trip mode. Now turn the vehicel off again. Wait 10 min, turn it on, then turn it off. It is now reset. If this does not work then the gauge may not be getting power, or the wires leading to it are bad.
