Some of the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe power steering problems are power steering pump failure and power steering fluid leaks. When it's starting to die, the power steering pump usually will make a whining or grinding noise. This is most evident when You turn the steering wheel. Eventually, the pump will fail, resulting in a lack of steering assist.A power steering pump ensures fluid reaches a cars power steering system. It consists of a slotted rotor that rotates and allows fluid to enter the pump. Once fluid enters the rotor, it continues to rotate and moves the fluid to discharge ports. At this point, the fluid enters a reservoir in the power steering system, where it helps the steering gear apply the proper amount of pressure to turn the wheels smoothly.

If the 2006 hyundai santa fe is having issues with the power steering pump then you will get whining noises when you turn the wheel, and it will be hard to turn the wheel.
