Some of the 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander transmission problems are erratic shifting or not shifting at all. If Your Mitsubishi transmission is not shifting normally, first check the transmission fluid level as soon as possible and, if needed, add the recommended fluid. Mitsubishi transmission problems quite often are caused by low transmission fluid level. Transmission fluid leaks can develop around the transmission pan gasket. If Your Mitsubishi has developed a harsh shift or is stuck in emergency mode (limp mode), the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) may be the problem. The VSS signal is sent to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and loss of signal due to a bad sensor can cause stuck in gear problems.

If the 2006 mitsubishi outlander is having issues with the transmission then you will notice several problems, including shaking or grinding while driving, a burning smell when the vehicle is on, the gears slipping when you shift, the shifter becoming stuck or non responsive, and leaking fluids. This can all lead to a transmission failure which will more or less kill the vehicle.
