The GMC Canyon's model year 2008 will have typical transmission problems common to all vehicles, which can be alleviated (usually) by either topping off Your ATF fluid or replacing it altogether. In addition to those, however, there are some You should be aware of that are specific to Your car, according to GMC's technical service bulletins (TSBs). TSB PIP4051C documents an issue with harsh shifting, where You'll hear gear grinding and have a P0717 code on Your dash. This usually is due to wire damage, typically the white wire, and it as well as the sensor will need to be replaced. Then, there's TSB 08-07-30-027, which documents a problem where there's no movement when the transmission is shifted into Drive or the 3rd gear position, but works normally when going into first, second, or reverse. If You encounter this, You'll need to replace the forward sprag assembly on the Canyon.
