The most common issue with the 2009 Jaguar XF's automatic transmission is typically a gearbox failure, but even that appears to not be too widespread; in general, so long as proper maintenance is performed at the suggested intervals, the XF's transmission should ideally last You for the life of the vehicle. All of the reports that I can find of a failure are anecdotal and in no way indicative of defects. You should be checking Your transmission fluid levels every 5,000 or so miles, and replacing it at 25,000 through 40,000 mile intervals. Doing so can help combat low levels or fluid breakdown, which can lead to transmission failure in any vehicle. Just remember, just because there aren't many issues with the transmission doesn't mean You're invincible; a luxury car requires proportionate upkeep and preventative maintenance.

The pan seal has a tendency to leak earlier than you would expect. Other than that my transmission (fingers crossed) and given regular maintenance has not been any trouble.
