The 2012 Chevy Sonic automatic transmission problems are delayed shift and slipping. The transmission is one of the most critical parts of the vehicle. You will face issues at some point. You could experience shudders. Hard shifts could arise and that is not good. There may be jerking. The gears might become stuck. Delayed shifts can cause acceleration issues. The transmission may slip. If the transmission fluid leaks, that needs to be solved quickly. The transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Along with fluid changes, terrible sounds will come from the transmission. Old transmission fluid will be awful to the ear. A worn out torque converter will cause a headache.

Since ownership of my 12 sonic in August 2012. Transmission jumps. How this car is engineered. Drove standard before. No alarm bells. Before stopping put the gear in neutral for better control! Shift back to drive after and repeat but no always use common sense. In heavy snow on streets go manual if you have automatic transmission as a back up you get better control. Maintain safe driving behavior.

If the 2012 Chevy sonic is having issues with the transmission then you will notice several problems, including shaking or grinding while driving, a burning smell when the vehicle is on, the gears slipping when you shift, the shifter becoming stuck or non responsive, and leaking fluids. This can all lead to a transmission failure which will more or less kill the vehicle.
