The BMW X3's power liftgate may fail to function due to a blown fuse that disables the hatch from opening. However, 2012 models are also subject to a BMW issued TSB that requires a JBE or "Junction Box Electronics" software re-progRamming. Failure to update the JBE software can result in the failure of the power liftgate to open. It can also cause inoperative power windows, failed door locks and windshield wipers and the failure of the proprietary ISTA or "Integrated Service Technical Application" to communicate with the car. Other electrical errors include an illuminated "Electronic Malfunction" warning light. Drivers are instructed to test the ISTA's ability to communicate with the vehicle and follow its prompts. If this fails, disconnect the JBE or battery for 30 minutes to perform a reset.

For the bmw x3 2020 the main issues with the lift gate will stem from a rusted or broken latch, or if it is an automatic lift gate the wires powering it may have burned out.

Just had a broken latch on my 2015 X3 that cost me over $3500 to fix. The broken latch caused a huge issue with the electronics and the spindles.
