2020 BMW X3 Review: Reasonably Dependable Luxury SUV With Expensive Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Nov 14, 2023

The 2020 BMW X3 lasts around 200,000 miles, with some stereo system and check engine lights reported. At $27,375 to $58,350, it’s expensive, but still a good value for a compact luxury SUV that offers a sportier driving experience than the competition.

likeFilled The Good
There are some powerful engine choices, the stereo system is easy to use, and there’s a good amount of passenger and cargo room.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The interior isn’t as nice as some other luxury SUVs, it’s missing Android Auto on the base model and the suspension is firm.

Amazing! Super innovative.
I really love this car I think is the best one I had so far. Is super fast you cannot feel the street while driving it, the seats are super comfy! The speaker are awesome and the sunroof is perfect to open it at night. The performance is great I haven't got any problem since I got it and I use it everyday.

The 2020 BMW x3 has a comfortable cabin.
The 2021 BMW x3 provides just about everything you could want in a luxury compact SUV. The x3 has zesty engine performance, spry handling, impressive fuel economy, and a cushioned ride. It is stylish inside and out, and it offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. The infotainment system is easy to use as well.

Great BMW options. Would be perfect if it had a larger screen like the tesla.
Love the way the car handles. Love the heated seats and heated steering wheel. Like that steering wheel adjusts depending who is in the car driver 1, driver 2 and driver 3, each driver has recorded seat adjustments, radio station. I like the large oversized sunroof that reaches to the back seat. I like the hands free hatch back opener. I like the indicator of car coming up in your blind spot, all cars should have this for safety. I like where you can see your tire pressures.

Heated steering wheel, heads up display.
My vehicle is very comfortable, does not have any problems, but very expensive. It is big, has good engine, has many features. I like driving this car. I do not want any another model. This one is perfect for me. Next one will be BMW too. But I believe not so expensive.

It is an overall great family car and I would def stand by it!
The 2020 x3 delivers strong acceleration, agile handling, and premium interior finishes that make it one of car and driver's favorites in a dense field of compact luxury crossovers. X3 30i models with the standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder strike a smart balance between power and fuel economy.

BMW series 3 is comfortable, high-tech, and affordable.
Sure enough, after 40 years this new generation declines to ambush us with any great surprises. It is still a sporty, smart, respectable, comforting prospect. That is despite the fact its component parts are almost entirely different from the last one. Pretty much all that is been handed on from before are the engines and transmissions. But we defy you to find much wrong with that particular inheritance. And anyway they've been improved.

BMW x3 2020 - amazing, definitely recommend this model.
My BMW x3 is great. I just received it last month. So far it drives very well, steering is nice and the ride is very smooth you barely feel any bumps in the road. I love the digital screen on the windshield that shows you your driving speed. The interior is great and I love the touch screen of the navigation and radio.

Whistle at driver side door after 66 mph
2020 X3 M40i -bought my wife . Upgraded from a 2005 X3 . Liked the looks, room, xtra horsepower, tech. Fully loaded executive package, oyster leather on carbon black. Paid 5k$ for 7 year 100 k miles plan. However, door whistle at 66 mph and over. Rode with service advisor. They gave it back said it was the packing wrap left under hood. Same problem. Whistle right in your left ear at speed. Have to go back again and again. This is not why I bought a new car. Looking on line this is a common problem. Guess what is notcovered on the lemon law and the manuf. Warranty? Air leaks. Car should be tight as a drum. Either BMW used crappy glass in their American cars( Europe cars get acoustic glass) or the Spartansburg assembly in S.C. Or the 16percent from Mexican parts is substandard 72k$ all in and I’m driving a whistle machine nobody wants to fix or be responsible for. Beyond aggravating. Depend on yourself for safety... Unless you want to pay.
Overall the x3 is a good car, but for the price it should have more features included, especially safety, without having to upgrade to a higher trim level or adding additional packages. While it has a blind spot warning, there's no lane departure assist and it does not beep if someone's in your blind spot while signaling. It also does not have a front parking camera, which I used every single time I wanted to park in our previous x3.
accountCircle Bill M
Safety
Blindspot monitoring is very unreliable and dangerous. It does not work if you pass a vehicle larger than a car such as a van or a semi. I was told by BMW that it is working properly and that the BSM does not apply to passing a vehicle. It only works when a vehicle approaches me. So am I to believe that if there as a van or an 18 wheeler in my BlindSpot the BSM should not alert me to that? BS.

What Do Critics Say About the BMW X3?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 BMW X3 offers a blend of driving enjoyment, comfort and luxury features with high owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the BMW X3 at 3.6/5, enjoying the spacious interior for front and rear passengers, but doesn’t like the high costs on the plug-in hybrid model.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the X3 a 4.4/5, praising the extremely precise handling, but owners don’t like the overly firm suspension on rough roads.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 BMW X3 Have?

Common problems reported on the 2020 BMW X3 include the center screen freezing, check engine lights, along with some paint chipping issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other small luxury SUVs on the market, but repair costs are higher than average due to the expensive parts and labor.

The center screen freezing is the most widespread complaint from 2020 X3 owners, showing up within the first 2,500 miles. There are software updates available for the touchscreen, which improves reliability. Most of these updates are done over the air while the car is parked, but in some cases you may need to take it to a dealership to have them updated for free.

Check-engine lights are another problem mentioned by some BMW X3 owners at around 15,000 miles. There are a lot of reasons why a check engine light may turn on. You will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to read the ECU for any codes. Once you know the source of the light, then fixing it can cost $50 to $800, depending on the source.

Paint chipping issues have also been reported on the 2020 BMW X3 in the first 10,000 miles. The paint on the front bumper and hood is prone to stone chips. Some people do touch ups for under $100, while others repaint the affected areas at a cost of roughly $1,000 per panel.

There are 13 recalls on the 2020 BMW X3, which is worse than other small luxury SUVs. The most serious recall covers the front axle swivel bearings, which may break, resulting in a crash. BMW will replace the bearings on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the rearview camera, the brake assist system, and the steering box, which BMW will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2020 BMW X3 Last?

A well-maintained 2020 BMW X3 can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Lexus RX. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than average, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $984 per year.

As a used 2020 X3 reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the liftgate support struts for $200, the coolant reservoir costing $350, along with the mass airflow sensor, which costs $550.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is great and includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and BMW’s iDrive. Optional upgrades include Android Auto, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is excellent, and features:

  • Rearview camera
  • Driver drowsiness monitoring
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Head-up display
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Parallel park assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Front and rear cross traffic alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Surround-view parking camera system

Is the 2020 BMW X3 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 BMW X3 is a good value if you’re in the market for a small luxury SUV which also offers a sporty driving experience. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $27,375 to $58,350, making it more than a Cadillac XT4 or Acura RDX. When new, the price range was $41,950 to $76,900. Depreciation is worse than some competitors, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it offers a combined fuel economy of 25 MPG. When it comes to acceleration, this engine propels the X3 from 0 to 60 MPH in about 6 seconds.
  • M40i: This sportier trim comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine. It delivers a robust 382 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft of torque. How Comfortable Is the BMW X3?

The 2020 BMW X3 stands out not only for its dynamic performance but also for its commitment to passenger comfort. Its interior boasts a blend of premium materials, with soft-touch surfaces, high-quality upholstery, and meticulous craftsmanship visible throughout the cabin. The seats, available in both standard synthetic leather and optional genuine leather, provide supportive cushioning, making both short city drives and long highway journeys equally pleasant. The front seats often come with power adjustments, and higher trims offer features like lumbar support and memory settings.

Passengers in the rear also enjoy ample legroom and headroom, suitable even for taller individuals. The cabin is well-insulated, providing a quiet ride by minimizing road and wind noise. Additionally, the X3 offers a suite of modern tech amenities, including an intuitive infotainment system, which further enhances the overall riding experience. Whether you’re navigating through urban landscapes or cruising on open roads, the 2020 BMW X3 provides a ride that prioritizes comfort and luxury.

How Much Storage Space Does the BMW X3 Have?

The 2020 BMW X3 is a luxury compact SUV that offers a combination of performance, comfort, and practicality. One of its notable features is its spacious cargo area. The combination of these storage options makes the X3 a practical choice for both daily commutes and extended road trips.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the BMW X3 was launched for the 2018 model year.

2015: Minor exterior styling changes with new front bumper, headlights, and more features available.

2016: The xDrive35i now comes with a standard 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

2017: Upgraded iDrive infotainment system, keyless ignition is standard on all xDrive35i models.

2018: Fully redesigned for the third generation with all new styling, technology, and engine choices.

2019: No changes from the earlier 2018 model, which was a full redesign.

2020: All-new plug-in hybrid model introduced with 18 miles of electric range.

2021: Updated standard safety features found on all models, Android Auto finally offered.

How Does the BMW X3 Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 BMW X3 is a very good small luxury SUV which offers excellent performance paired with some of the latest technology features.

The Audi Q5 is another small luxury SUV, which can be found for about $1,500 more. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Audi Q5, while the BMW X3 offers a sportier driving experience. We recommend the BMW X3 since it’s cheaper to own long-term, but both are good choices.

The Mercedes Benz GLC is a popular competitor available in the same price range. Standard entertainment technology is better in the Mercedes GLC, while the BMW X3 is more fun to drive on winding roads. We recommend the BMW X3 since maintenance costs are cheaper, although both are very similar.

My BMW x3 is the smoothest and sleekest car that I have ever driven.
I love this car! It drives very smooth and has all the decked out gadgets and upgrades a driver could want. I have been making several long drives in the past year and this car is perfect and comfortable for these trips. Not only is the car very safe and comforting for me as a driver, I greatly trust the brand as well. The only area where I am not 100% satisfied is the cost of upkeep for the vehicle. It is a lot more expensive than other brands of cars that I have previously owned for regular servicing operations. The customer service of the brand though while servicing is very good and almost makes me forget about how expensive it is.

Very easy to get scratches on the interior. Has a lot of cool features wish there was a way to change interior lighting color. I like the option of listening to CDs. BMW x3 problems are noted below: the oil leaks often. Sunroof rattle and leak. Window rattle. Overheat due to radiators. Timing chain guide failure. X3 engines are prone to oil leaks. Old cars and of high mileage cars are most likely to face this kind of problems. Although BMW x3s are very reliable vehicles.

Perfect luxury car for you.
I absolutely love my car. It is quiet, handles extremely well, and is so gratifying to drive. I was recently driving on an interstate where semis do not look for other drivers. The semi almost drove into a car who swerved into the lane I was about to merge in, I had to slam my breaks and the car reacted immediately, avoiding a collision. The blind spot assist is wonderful and makes me feel more safe. The rear view camera is crisp and clear and provides accurate guides. The vehicle also detects your surroundings and warns you when you are too close to curbs when parking. The break hold option is very necessary and helpful in the suburbs. I love the panoramic sunroof, it feels so open. The driver seats has great adjustments, I have the lumbar support, and it works wonders for my body. I usually do not like driving but I love driving this car. I test drove other cars, including Mercedes, and the layout of the BMW is so much better inside and drives even better. I also drove a brand new Volkswagen tiguan and it does not compare to the drive of the BMW. I also test drove a 2020 BMW x1 and 2021 x2, and the 2019 BMW x3 is so well equipped and sleeker than these.

My BMW has a panoramic roof soft leather seating with a large multimedia screen.
I cannot think of any problems associated with my vehicle. The vehicles performance is impeccable. Outstanding vehicle handling and sporty design is exciting. The vehicle is reliable with exceptional comfort. The cabin provides exemplary design at an affordable price. Truly a winner.

Adaptable car for a young family.
The car is extremely comfortable to drive. I feel safe when driving it and when my boyfriend drives it. My music plays well in the car. It is also great for drives with multiple friends and our dog is able to fit in the car. Overall it is one of the best cars I have had.

The most reliable car I have owned.
This car has been awesome so far. I drive it when I go across the state, and I drive it in many different weather conditions as well. It has not had any mechanical problems so far either. It is very comfortable as well, and so far this is my favorite car I have owned.

Heated steering wheel, heads up display.
My vehicle is very comfortable, does not have any problems, but very expensive. It is big, has good engine, has many features. I like driving this car. I do not want any another model. This one is perfect for me. Next one will be BMW too. But I believe not so expensive.

A gorgeous ride for a beautiful woman.
When I drive, I feel like I am floating, it is very comfortable and reliable, it makes driving seem so easy and it makes me look really good too. It is a brand I have always trusted and will continue to trust. The sound system takes me places. I do not even feel stressed when I am in traffic. It is also makes me feel really proud to own it.

The best car that I have ever had and I have had 10 cars in my life.
It is amazing and I am able to really drive long distances without feeling tired driving it. I can also go months without changing the oil and it still performs fairly well. I like that I can also use this car as my most reliable form of transportation.

2020 BMW x3 needs more feature in interior.
Digital speedometer not show it as in mile. Also, do not like cockpI'design. Feel too big consider to other competitor (Audi q5, Mercedes Benz glc). However, really like how the vehicle is very smooth and quiet. I like to see more technology features without additional costs.

Really fun fast car. Good features but needs seat coolers.
Very good fast vehicle. Looks very nice but not great because it's not very tall. When you get in you can hit your head. Nice features and good sound system. Seat coolers would be nice such as the ones in the genesis by Hyundai. It is very hot where I live so I would appreciate that very much.

Very nice car to buy! Would buy again anytime.
I enjoy how it is luxurious, fast and I also love that it gets decent gas mileage for the power it has and I like import cars for an import it works very well unlike American cars which break down a lot however I do like supporting America. So all in all I very much like the car and would buy another.

All around reliable and very good for road trips if that is what you are into.
I really recommend the car there’s not many if not any problems with the car well there is the little hiccup every now and then where you'll press the gas and it will completely stall but I think that is just something with mine because my brother has the same vehicle and his does not have that same problem overall I do recommend it.

BMW x3 superdrive amazing to drive.
The BMW x3 is great. It is smooth to drive, it performs great. Rather you enjoy a nice luxury drive around the city car or a an off road truck to get through mood and hard dirt. The BMW x3 is amazingly comfortable and can fit anyone's needs. I originally purchased it as my first time mom car that would work great for children.

Good handling and sleek design.
The car is not the best in the snow. You will slip and fishtail in bad weather such as snow and ice. The handling is very good. Tight turns and easy to park. The acceleration is good but not great. Not the best on gas either. It is also expensive to make repairs.

My best buy to start 2020.
Perfect size. Reliable handling and responsiveness for winters in the northeast. Comfortable for those long drives on and off the highway. Touchscreen system is fabulous. Dash is a perfect distance making the radio, telephone and directions right at your fingertips.

Great car, very spacious and luxurious. 10/10 would recommend to everyone.
Really extremely great, super nice car. Very impressed with the drivetrain. Nice family car, has a nice interior. Good technology that keeps you safe. Smooth ride on all road types. No problems so far, very enjoyable. Looks great on the outside. Good gas mileage, goes very far without another fill up being needed. Would recommend and tell my friends.

BMW are good quality and beautiful cars but you have to take care of them and pu.
Beautiful. Ride very smooth. Worth every penny spent. I promise you. BMW always have good and beautiful cars, never seen any bad reviews. My boyfriend also owns a BMW and is thinking about purchasing another 1. Of course these car parts will be expensive and maintaining the car will also be expensive but overall it is a good automobile.
