The FIAT 500, which employed FIATs proprietary Dualogic transmission, has a number issues reported by users. It is known to experience gear slipping, transmission problems, difficulties and occasionally, complete inability in changing gears, among other issues. The Dualogic system is a manual gearbox that works with both automatic and manual driving. The driver simply controls the gears using a lever in the car. This system, however, led to many issues in practice. Some users report new 500s being unable to reverse. Other users say that overtime, they arent able to change gears fluidly. Some users reported gear slipping as well, with the general consensus being that the car has issues with transmission.

Avoid duologic March 5, 2023
I would advise people to avoid the Duologic at all costs. They are very unreliable, horrendously expensive to repair and frankly dangerous. I had one fail at 70mph on the M25. FIAT are fully aware of the issues but avoid replacing the units under warranty and try bodge repairs. As soon as it's out of warranty they insist on replacement.

My solution to the problem with the Dualogic semi-automatic gearbox robot in the Fiat 500. Maybe similar to the problem with the robot in the Fiat Ducato?? There by posting in this forum. Problem: The robot shifts by itself from 5th gear to neutral when applying the gas when you want to start an overtaking or when you brake and the box needs to shift from 5th gear to 3rd or 2nd. The problem seems to occur when the computer wants to shift from 5th down to 3rd or sometimes the 2nd. I've had that problem with two different fiat 500s, the first from model year 2012 when the car had driven about 150,000 km and the second from model year 2016 when the car had driven about 50,000 km. The problem with both started during the winter in freezing temperatures, and always, at the beginning, only when braking so that the box needed to shift from 5 to 3 or 2. The problem almost disappeared in warmer seasons. From the beginning I saw that the oil level of the hydraulic oil in the reservoir was low so I topped it up but it didn't help unfortunately. However, the level needs to be adjusted to max. The container is attached to the robot. There is a good description online of where it sits and how to fill it, so I skip that part in this text. I did some other things on the robot and since then I have not been able to reproduce the error. In the past I could reproduce the failure almost any time I drove in 5th and forced a downshift. I have tested the car now for four weeks and a trip to northern Sweden where I tested the car in minus 20 degrees. No problem!! 😊 After reading a lot of posts and theories from all over the world, I began to suspect that the problem is electrical, more precisely due to the necessary amperes that the solenoids and the pump need when the current consumption reaches its peak. The theory was reinforced when I realized that the problem was the worst, and started to show itself, at freezing temperatures when I had both seat heaters, rear window heaters (incl. Mirrors) and the extra base box running during the winter period. At the same time as the battery is also cold and maybe not brand new either because of poorer performance. What I did: Took out the solenoid located at the far end closest to the driver's seat, no strange things observed. I still activated the solenoid by hand several times. I did this by simply connecting the poles of the solenoid directly to the plus and minus of the car battery. The polarity does not matter. You see that the spike goes out, and it should do so with force without getting stuck in the road. Push the stud in by hand and repeat a few times. It should also have quite a lot of clean oil on it when you take it out. Be careful with the spring and nipple located behind the solenoid. Don't lose them!! Unplug all electrical connectors from the robot and clean with electronics cleaning spray. I drove with Biltemas. Then, probably most important(!) remove and clean all negative connections all the way from the Battery to the body and then to the robot. I had a little oxidation on the battery terminal, a little on the negative connection to the body and a little on the negative connection to the robot. That said, I've been driving the car for four weeks now with no problems even though I've really tried to reproduce the fault but everything works as it should. Hope this helps!

Some potential problems with transmission shifting in a fiat 500 1.2 Dualogic is due to a lack of transmission fluid or contamination due to lack of maintenance.
