The GMC Terrain's Eco mode is generally praised by drivers for its ability to function on a continuous basis without damaging the transmission but some owners have indicated it can emit a loud "banging sound" that imitates shifting into multiple gears at once. GMC Terrain vehicles, however, have been plagued with both excessive oil consumption and transmission failures that have resulted in both A-Classction lawsuits and engine replacement. The 2010-2013 model years were most affected and a legal dispute claimed faulty piston rings caused the issue. 2010-2011 Terrains typically burn througH1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles, eventually causing engine failure. 2011 vehicles suffer from early tranny failure as well. Operating in Eco mode will only exacerbate the problem. Average repairs are over $4,000.
