Like most vehicles, the Subaru Crosstrek should visit a certified service center for regular maintenance checkups. At between 30,000 and 70,000 miles the brakes should be inspected and their pads replaced. Rotors should last longer...between 70,000-100,000 miles. However, owners of the Subaru Crosstrek complain of having to replace the rear and/or front brakes at under 50,000 miles. Some at less than 20,000 miles. When pads start to fail they produce grinding, squealing or screeching sounds as metal parts hit the metal rotors, and drivers may experience vibrations through the steering wheel or pedal. Another common complaint associated with the Crosstrek involves calipers easily collecting road debris when off-roading or traveling on unpaved roads. More than one owner has found rocks or pebbles trapped in their calipers that cause rattling while moving.

I am at 45K miles and had my brakes replaced twice; front and back all the rotors were replaced on the last brake change; According to the service guy He said that this is not uncommon- he sees it all the time.

I have 68,574 mi on my 2018 Crosstrek. Cautious driver. Regularly maintain. Have needed to replace brakes and rotors twice. Two days ago my brakes felt stiff as if locking in place, then they smoked. Diagnosis=front l/r calipers. $1100 dealership repair. Brakes and rotors are only 4mos old. Other side note: thinnest paint I’ve ever experienced on a vehicle. Lots of chips within first year even though I only drive on the interstate and paved. No off-roading. Rattle noise since day one that sounds like it’s in the front but they’ve never been able to diagnose. Windshield wipers and maximum speed is almost useless. Not confident in this Crosstrek.
My 2018 Crosstrek is currently in for its 60000 km servicing and I’m informed that the rear brakes need to be completely redone - again and the fronts need regrinding. With the exception of a 2000 Volvo, I have never ever needed brake work done on any of my vehicles, all of which have been purchased new. My 2017 Subaru BRZis still motoring along, with similar milage with no brake issues. What is the problem with the Crosstreks?

There have been reported issues with the subaru crosstrek brakes and some the the problems reported are brake pads wearing prematurely, warped rotors, and brake relay switch failure.
