There are no reported problems for the 2013 Chevrolet Captiva's timing chain, nor are there any current or past recalls for it. In general, timing chains are going to give You service for the life of the car, or close to it. Unlike belts, there's scant maintenance required to keep them running well, other than keeping up with Your engine fluids. That said, they can and do fail, in all vehicles, occasionally. Some signs that Yours might be is if You hear rattling sounds from the engine while it's idling, or if it mIS Fires, or You find metal shavings in the oil. Or, of course, if the check engine light comes on with a related code

If the timing chain fails, the engine instantly stalls. This is because the engine can't turn on synchronously anymore. This could result in internal damage to the engine if the engine does not have valve reliefs built into the pistons of the engine. In the case of total failure, the control engine light will glow on the dashboard, and obd trouble codes will be recorded for misfires, crankshaft position and camshaft position. Often, it may sound different than normal when attempting to boot the engine. At worst, in the event of mechanical damage metallic clattering noises may be heard.

I’ve had 2 timing chains done in 3 years and it may need another. Wouldn’t recommend this engine to my worst enemy
