The 2014 Chevy Malibu's transmission is supposed to remain maintenance free for almost 200,000 miles, not needing a transmission flush. The "permanently" lubricated tranny does not feature a dipstick, but owners have complained of hard downshifting and "thumping" noises at just under 50,000 miles. Others have noticed "rattling" noises from the engine bay. In both instances, low transmission fluid levels were found to be causing hard shifting and tranny noises. Under normal conditions, lubricants should be replaced every 30,000-60,000 miles. Failure to do so may result in gear slippage, harsh shifting and tranny failure. For Malibu owners this has happened just below100,000 miles. Cost of fluid service, flush and refill for the Malibu averages $160-$200 in materials and labor.
