The cost to replace the engine in a 2006 4runner is not cheap. The engine will run You around 3000 dollars. That is for a used or rebuilt engine as well. You likely won't be able to find a new one, but if You do it is going to be a lot more than that. The labor of having it removed and replaced will be another 1000 to 1500 on top of the 3000 from before. You can expect this to also be a two-day job MINImum, so don't be in a hurry to get the car back. With as old as that vehicle is it may be better to look for a new model of the vehicle than try and fix that one.

Depends on where you live.I know someone that did JDM doing all the work himself and it was about $3-4k. I’m in the process of doing this on a 1998 doing all the work myself and using a reman 5vzfe. Probably closer to 5-6k after replacing a few other key parts (clutch, fan bracket, hoses, etc). Local shop said ~3k in labor alone.
