The Ford Ranger came with one of five different automatic transmission codes (for eight different automatic transmissions) during the 1983 to 2011 run of the truck. Your specific code will be located on Your safety compliance certification label on the driver's door post. If You've got an automatic transmission, You'll see either V, W, T, D, or R. Those are listed from old to new. For the sake of recency, I'll only go over the ones used since 2000 -- D and R. D stands for the 5R44E on 2.3L and 3.0L models, which has gear ratios of 2.47 in first, 1.86 in second, 1.47 in third, 1.00 in fourth, and 0.75 in fifth. It stands for the 5R55E on 4.0L models, with the same gear ratios. R stands for the 5R55W, which is only available on the 2002-2011 4.0L models. Its gear rations are 3.22 in first, 2.41 in second, 1.55 in third, 1.00 in fourth, and 0.75 in fifth.
