The check engine light in Your 2016 Chevy Equinox can be triggered by many different issues but most times it is something to do with the emissions system. The first thing You should check is Your gas cap, make sure it is not missing or loose. The vehicle treats a loose or missing gas cap as a fault because it is used to trap fuel vapors in the system which not only stops them from releasing into the atmosphere but it also helps improve the fuel efficiency. When the system reads a lack of pressure in the system, it sets off the check engine light. Some other parts that may cause a CEL to come on are a faulty O2 sensor, an old or missing(stolen) catalytic converter or even a loose exhaust component.

The code would need to be identified. There are way too many possibilities. There are several common issues with this vehicle, and the most common are the VVT solenoids, and other engine related issues. The code can be "pulled" at most auto parts stores for free.
