The 2004 Honda Pilot is well documented for struggling with a shuddering torque converter that can be caused by faulty or d***y transmission fluid or bad gear switches. The problem manifests as rumbling under the dash at 35-40 mph when the transmission has less than 25,000 miles on it. Tapping the gas or brake slightly will temporarily interrupt the sound, but when driving is resumed shuddering returns and causes a drop in rpms. Owners have had succeSSReplacing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches to correct the shudder as well as scheduling a transmission flush and filter change with fully synthetic fluid. Specifically, 4 quarts of Redline D4 ATF is recommended to replace the OEM installed conventional Honda fluid.
