Mar 7, 2023

The 2020 Honda Pilot lasts around 250,000 miles with minor stereo system and battery drain issues reported. At $26,998 to $42,998, it’s a good value for a spacious midsize SUV that’s perfect for a larger family.

likeFilled The Good
There’s a ton of passenger room in the cabin, the suspension is smooth and the engine is very efficient for its size.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s difficult to climb into the third row, the collision warning system is overly sensitive and the steering feels loose.

Good value,
Just bought my 8th Honda, 6 Pilots, a wonderful car, retains value, 2020 model is loaded with safety gear, very smooth operation, comfortable, so smart it nearly drives it's self. Did quite a bit of research before my first Honda, it lead the way.

Love my pilot! Great features, comfortable, and stylish.
My Honda pilot is comfortable and reliable. Its drives smoothly and is elevated but not too large. I have had no issues with my pilot. It is comfortable and stylish. My pilot has great features including Bluetooth, phone call compatibility and custom settings. I am hoping to keep my pilot for many years to come!

Very nice and big car with lots of space.
The car is very comfortable and nice to drive, not many complaints. Wish the back seats had a seat cooler instead of just a heater, but it's ok because the ac system works pretty well, a lot of space in the trunk as we keep the back row down. Have had our dogs in this car of different sizes (12-100 lb dogs) and they all fit comfortably. The only complaint is after a few months something happened with the computer of the car and it wasn't working and we had to get the car towed and fixed, but ever since then the car has been perfectly fine and works well. The safety features like auto braking and lane keep work well and notify you when they're being used to bring your attention back if you're ever not focused. Very nice and comfortable car, especially here in Southern California where it's super hot, inside it's nice and cool and comfy with tons of storage space and some nice speakers to listen to music with.

It has been a smooth ride all the way. Very comfortable. I have had no issues with my vehicle and it's a joy to ride in it. I have no regrets. I am glad my husband convinced me to buy the car. My kids love it and so far it's been very reliable.

I love the color of my car along with the added features.
Drives smooth, acceleration quick, comfortable and roomy, sleek and sophisticated. Priced reasonable and provides a lot of added entertainment features. Great for transporting the kids and their friends to their after school activities as well has for family outings. I would recommend the Honda to anyone that wants and SUV put drives like a car.

Best Honda pilot model yet!
I love the comfort of the new 2020 Honda pilot touring. The control panel is very user friendly and has a very responsive touchscreen to easily switch between different settings and applications. The drive is very smooth and the cabin is a lot quieter than previous year models. I love the hands free tailgate feature for groceries. It makes opening and closing a breeze when your hands are full.

Honda’s are the best vehicles made!
Honda is a wonderful vehicle. The safety features are first class and recently saved the lives of my mother, my sister and myself when involved in a front end collision. The Honda pilot is reliable, capable and extremely comfortable to ride in and a pleasure to drive. I can always rely on my Honda to get me where I need to be safely and securely and, of course, in comfort.

Poor quality
2020 Pilot EX-L is poorly built from the factory. Need to replace the transmission after fluid is leaking in 4000 miles. Also, cracking speaker sounds etc. Just look for Toyota. Honda quality is really go down hill in the last couple years

It's a beautiful, roomy, and well thought out car. But it's an electrical nightmare. Have had my brand new 2020 Pilot Elite in shop three times for electrical issues, including crackling, popping from speakers. (Information display went black, won't complete update, then "repaired" at dealer who gouged my interior cargo compartment while "repairing" (changed out 8 boss connectors they said). They blew fuses on interior lights and didn't bother to check before returning vehicle to me. Took back same day for fuse replacement. Four days later, there is no Cruise Control, and the exterior mirrors turned a dark green color. Once car shut off, green color disappeared but still need to check cruise control to see if it's working again. This car is an electrical nightmare. I am on the road to NEVER buying a Honda product again, and will spread the word far and wide about why. I only have 4800 miles on it, purchased 12/31/19 new. Desperately wish I had stayed with my beloved Toyotas.

Honda pilot a family car!
I do like my Honda pilot. I love the extra room in the seats. There is very little storage space unless the back seat is down. I miss the gear shift to put in park and drive but I am getting used to the buttons. My kids love being able to watch movies in the car. I wish the tailgate was a little easier to manage when you have an arm full of groceries. Also I hate car shopping and bargaining so that does turn me off from buying new cars.

The car is wonderful but lacks so newer features.
This car is very comfortable. Driving this car on the highway is great. The gas mileage is good for a car this size. Unfortunately this car does not have a lot of basic extras. There is no button to close the trunk. The apple car play does not work well with some phones. Also it does not have dual buttons for see position memory. A frustrating feature is while the lights are on automatic they go to high beams when the car feels it is too dark but they do not turn off in time when another car comes the opposite direction.

My review of my Honda 2020 car.
I love the comfort ability of my car. I think for the price if the vehicle it is a great option. As it is a 2020 edition, the technology, sound system, and touch screen price to be a wonderful commodity of the newer cars. I would highly recommend the Honda pilot to any anyone who wants an affordable, reliable car for their household.

The new Honda pilot model.
It is a great family car, but having previously owned a Honda pilot touring, the horse power in the regular pilot is a disappointment! Also the new pilot is much more compact, and it feels a bit closed in, it is also not as spacious as the previous pilot model.

What Do Critics Say About the Honda Pilot?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Honda Pilot offers excellent functionality for large families, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Pilot at 3.5/5, praising the smooth suspension on rough roads, but doesn’t like the overly-sensitive collision warning system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Pilot a 3.5/5, enjoying the comfortable cabin, but owners don’t like the weak brakes for its size.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Honda Pilot Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Honda Pilot include crackling noises from the stereo system, excessive electrical draw, along with a brake warning light on the dash. Overall, these problems are similar to other midsize SUVs with average repair costs as the Pilot ages.

Crackling noises from the stereo system are the most widespread complaints on the 2020 Honda Pilot from owners in the first 5,000 miles. There are software updates for the stereo system which improves the reliability of the amplifier. Some owners also report having their stereo replaced for free under warranty if there are physical problems with the unit.

Excessive electrical draw, leading to dead batteries, have also been reported by some owners at around 2,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the Honda Pilot which may drain the battery while it’s off. Diagnosing the source of the problem costs around $50, while fixing the issue can cost $20 to $250, depending on the source.

A brake warning light on the dash has also shown up on some 2020 Pilot models in the first 10,000 miles. Owners report the issue showing up with the automatic braking system. There are software updates which improve the braking system performance. Most dealerships will install this update for free, while some will charge around $50.

There are five recalls on the 2020 Honda Pilot, which is more than some other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the instrument panel software, which needs to be updated to fix a display issue. The other recalls cover the rearview camera, tires, along with a certification sticker.

How Long Will the 2020 Honda Pilot Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Honda Pilot can last around 250,000 miles, which is only around 50,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $493 per year.

As a used 2020 Honda Pilot reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the variable valve timing control solenoid for $475, timing belt tensioner costing $550, along with the engine front cover gasket which costs $300.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is okay with a standard small 5-inch information display. Optional upgrades are better including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Standard safety technology is excellent for a midsize SUV offering features including:

  • Road departure mitigation
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Lane departure warning

Optional advanced driver assistance features include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Rear cross traffic alert

The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $26,998 to $42,998, making it similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Hyundai Palisade. When new, the price range was $31,650 to $49,720. What Colors Does the Honda Pilot Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Honda Pilot?

The 2020 Honda Pilot is a comfortable and spacious midsize SUV with seating for up to eight people, making it an ideal choice for families and those who prioritize comfort on long drives. The Pilot offers seating for up to eight passengers, with ample legroom and headroom in all three rows of seats. The front seats are well-cushioned and supportive, providing a comfortable driving position for drivers of all sizes.

The second-row seats are also quite comfortable and can slide and recline for added flexibility. The third-row seats are best suited for children or smaller adults, but they still offer enough space for short trips.

However, when the second and third rows of seats are folded down, the Pilot offers a total cargo volume of 83.9 cubic feet, which is an impressive amount of space for larger items such as furniture or outdoor equipment.

In addition to the cargo area, the Pilot has several clever storage solutions throughout the cabin, including a large center console, a bin under the cargo floor, and various compartments and cup holders for smaller items. Overall, the Honda Pilot is a practical and versatile option for families and anyone who needs a spacious SUV.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Honda Pilot was launched in 2016, and will be replaced by the fourth generation for the 2023 model year.

2015: New SE Model added to the lineup which is between the EX and EX-L models.

2016: Fully redesigned for the third generation with new styling, technology, and engine.

2017: Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all models with the touchscreen stereo.

2018: No major changes.

2019: Standard Honda Sensing safety system, improved stereo system, minor exterior styling changes.

2020: Black edition model added to the lineup with unique exterior trim.

2021: Dual-zone climate control offered on base LX model, standard nine-speed automatic transmission.

How Does the Honda Pilot Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Honda Pilot is a very nice midsize SUV offering plenty of room for a family along with lower ownership costs than some of the competitors on the market.

The Toyota Highlander is another popular choice, which costs around $2,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Honda Pilot, while the Toyota Highlander has lower ownership costs as it ages. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since they last slightly longer, although both are good choices for the 2020 model year.

The Subaru Ascent is a competitor available for about $1,500 less. Off-road performance is better with the Subaru’s dedicated AWD system, while the Honda Pilot offers more passenger room. We recommend the Honda Pilot since the reliability ratings are higher, leading to lower ownership costs.

Good option for large families.
No problems. Extremely comfortable. Fits my tall husband and all 6 of our family members. Does great in bad weather. The AWD is steady. Gas mileage is really good. We have had zero issues. It has lane assist which is nice. The 3rd row is large enough for an adult to sit in.

Great family car with lots of room!
Love the pilot. Have two little girls who are in car seats so needed a car with plenty of room. It is an eight passenger vehicles and even with the two car seats in the middle row we can fit a person between them. With my old Honda we couldn't do that. We also couldn't fit anyone else in the car besides my husband me and the kids. Now we have additional seating for more family and friends. Not sure how I felt about leather seats but now that I have them I love them and easier to clean if the kids have an accident. Love the heated seats in winter.

Considering the car is from this actual year it was a lower amount of money.
It is very comfortable. Precious colors inside and outside. Even if it looks comfortable my only complaint about it is when I put gasoline. I feel that it goes kind of fast for just a couple of rides during the week. We used to have a Honda before from the year 2014, I it didn’t give us this specific problem or other kind of problem. Otherwise I would say maybe it is worth the price; we only have 5 months with it. It is the kind of looking car we wanted, I do not complain; the way we got it was fast and kind of cheap. They didn’t ask us for much money at the place we got it even we had some more money in case it was expensive. We’re still paying and the payments are flexible. I got a long term payment contract and everything is in order right now.

The vehicle is great to drive. Fits up to 8 passengers. It's very comfortable with heated seats and very nice sound with a subwoofer. Overall driving the pilot is amazing. You can barely feel any bumps on the road and the Honda sensing is a very nice feature as well since it keeps you alert when driving. Whether you are switching lanes or assisting you on breaking if you don't have a fast response to it.

Honda pilot 2020: perfect for any environment!
I love this car. My dad had his Honda pilot for 13 years before trading it in for the 2020 and we live it. Perfect for the mountains, the beach, or really any environment. The only thing we do not like is a software issue that has occurred in our car a couple of times that turns off pretty much anything audio related and does not allow the screen to turn off (leaving the battery running). Although this was inconvenient, it resolved itself within 48 hours.

Great comfort for large families!
The main benefit is that it is spacious! Which is essential for a family. It does great with gas mileage considering it is a large vehicle. All of the essentials like navigation and sunroof, large heated, comfortable seats for long trips. Honda always makes quality cars, and I can always count on them being reliable.

Realizable, spacious, beautiful family vehicle.
Just purchased the vehicle. No problems. Extremely comfortable. The kids love the extra room. The 3 room seating is wonderful to have. The sunroof is a beautiful feature. Wonderful to drive on the highway. Tells if other cars are to close. Love the line correction feature.

The pilot is a great SUV.
Safety features are awesome and it is very modern looking compared to my last vehicle. Very roomy and love how it seats 8 people. Would highly recommend the pilot to anyone with a big family. Great on long road trips and ride is very smooth. Honda is great!

Safety features and alerts are really useful.
Plenty of room for storage and road trips. Fits up to 8 people and has different settings for tires. Can use Bluetooth for making calls and looking thru contacts, it also allows for me to use maps from my phone as a convenient GPS. Can also connect playlist from my phone to the sound system. It's a great car for a large family and great for taking on vacation to fill with luggage. Safety features are great for learning how to drive since it gives you alerts when you close to other cars and you have a camera to show you what is behind the car. That is a great feature to use when parking or learning how to horizontal park.

The vehicle is great for road trips and reliability.
I have owned my vehicle for many years now and it has yet to give me a problem. I am a frequent commuter and traveler and my vehicle is superior for road tripping with its luxury, comfort and reliability. I would buy Honda pilots for the rest of time. I am currently on my second for reasons unrelated to car performance.

USB cables in the back which is great for road trips or just long car rides.
It is a really comfortable and spacious car. Runs super smooth on the freeway which is nice and it alerts you when there is a car on the side or behind you by your blind spots. It has 3 rows of seats which includes the front and passenger seat which is great for a somewhat big family.

The new Honda pilot model.
It is a great family car, but having previously owned a Honda pilot touring, the horse power in the regular pilot is a disappointment! Also the new pilot is much more compact, and it feels a bit closed in, it is also not as spacious as the previous pilot model.

My car is so beautiful.
So reliable, I love it so much and the color and just car texture is awesome and you cannot beat it. If you ever want to buy a new car, I really recommend you getting the pilot; especially because I have the all blacked out edition and it is unbeatable, and by far the best car I have ever had.

My 2020 Honda pilot white exterior black interior.
Its really spacious and comfortable! Runs smooth and I have no problems what's so ever! I love that it has apple play! It has ac in the back too. The interior of it is back which I love. You can also control the ac from the back seats and it locks so the kids cannot play around with it.

Smooth riding Honda pilot.
I have no problems with the vehicle at all. I love the heated seats in the winter. Love the smooth ride on the road. Love that I can have up to 8 people in the vehicle if I want or can have the 3rd row of seats down for more storage space especially when we go shopping for clothes or groceries.

Review mirrors
My rear view mirrors do not hold a "set". Drivers side slowly falls and does not come back to original set. It is difficult entering freeway or changing lanes when one sees door handle in review mirror. Yes, Ive reported it and shall keep doing so.

Comfortable and at the max.
It is a really wide and enjoyable car. I like that the seats are comfortable and in a nice blue/ navy color. When parking, the screen also shows the back view, which I find very helpful. It drives very smoothly and has many compartments to put things in.

The driver seat has settings for 2 drivers.
It has been a smooth ride all the way. Very comfortable. I have had no issues with my vehicle and it's a joy to ride in it. I have no regrets. I am glad my husband convinced me to buy the car. My kids love it and so far it's been very reliable.

Large screen and apple CarPlay is really great.
The screen and apple CarPlay are wonderful. I love the size and stability of the vehicle. Gas mileage is pretty good for a vehicle like this. I do miss my Nissan around view camera. The cargo area is large. Seats are comfortable. I am having an issue with mirrors adjusting when backing up sometimes and not adjusting back to normal. I love all the safety bells and whistles.

My love hate relationship for the new 2020 Honda pilot ex-l. Love it or hate it.
V6 is a little too much, dash is outdated unlike the highlander and the front design is just like CR-V. Does not stand out. I just love how big and spacious it is for my family and my 2 kids. Driving is very smooth and seats are comfortable. Airplay is a plus. Leather seats are very elegant too. Center console a little bland for my taste.
