"ESC" on the Chevrolet Malibu and other General Motors vehicles stands for "Electronic Stability Control", which is a safety feature designed to reduce the number and severity of accidents caused by a loss of vehicular control. It compensates for over-steering and under-steering, by providing additional traction and anti-skid support. For instance, if You swerve quickly (perhaps due to a child in the road), ESC helps prevent a rollover by stabilizing Your vehicle during the sharp motion. It's also valuable in harsh weather conditions, as it can be used effectively to compensate for icy patches. ESC uses a yaw sensor, wheel speed sensors, a steering angle sensor, and a hydraulic unit, working in tandem, to keep You safe in unfortunate and unpredictable situations.
