If the L4 is activated in the Chevy Equinox, 4 wheel-drive will be engaged constantly. The terminology actually translates to "four wheel drive low range" and means all four wheels will remain locked into drive until the 4L is switched off, but used at a slow, "crawling" pace. The feature is useful for steep descents, certain heavy hauling scenarios and when seeking more stability for short-term off-roading situations or hill climbing. It is hard on the transmission and not designed to be engaged continuously. "L2" likewise refers to "low-speed two wheel drive" and is used for similar off-roading conditions and uneven driving surfaces where a low speed, front wheel drivetrain is preferred.
