The P button in the Ford Escape is Ford Active ParkAssist, you can only use it to parallel park with ease. You can't use it to park in a parking spot, such as a parking spot in a parking lot.Push the "Auto |P|" button. Wait for the light to be lit. This will ask the car to engage in this setting.
