VTM4 on an Acura MDX stands for Variable Torque Management 4WD System. This is the system that controls the amount of torque that gets applied to the rear wheels. What makes this system different is that it can control that torque independently for the rear wheels. If the vehicle senses that You have lost traction it can automatically control the amount of torque sent to the rear wheels allowing You to regain that traction. If Your Mdx has a warning light on for this system You will need to start by scanning Your vehicle codes to see what they say about the fault. The most common cause of this warning light seems to be an EGR valve failure. The VTM4 light is usually accompanied by a check engine light that comes on at the same time.

Under lower traction conditions, the variable torque management 4wd system (vtm-4) automatically transfers varying amount of engine torque to the rear wheels.
