The evaporator canister, otherwise known as the purge valve, on the 2002 Chevy TrailBlazer is located above the rear of the muffler. The EVAP canister houses 1-2 pounds of activated charcoal that acts like a sponge by absorbing and storing fuel vapors until the purge valve opens. It then allows the vacuum of the engine intake to siphon the fuel vapors from the charcoal into the engine intake manifold. Common signs of a failing evaporator canister include the Check Engine Light coming on, raw fuel smell coming from the back of the car, and a collapsed or leaking fuel tank.
