The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in a 2002 Honda CR-V is in the engine compartment at the output shaft of the transmission. More specifically, it's close to the starter at the top of the transaxle. To access it, You will need to remove the battery and the battery tray, which has four 10mm bolts. This part sends transmission data to the vehicle's powertrain control module, so calculations can be made to determine which gear the transmission should be in. When the VSS fails, the check engine light usually comes on, but there are other symptoms, as well. These include inability to engage cruise control, erratic speedometer readings, hard braking, overdrive light blinks, difficult shifting, and long shifting intervals. The average cost to have the VSSReplaced on a 2002 CR-V is $190 to $250, including labor.
