The Ford Escape uses Mercon ATF Power Steering Fluid. While not often considered a high maintenance item, power steering fluid is nevertheless an important part of Your vehicle's steering system. The cost of getting Your power steering flushed is between $100 and $130. There is disagreement on how often power steering fluid should be changed. The general consensus is that it should be performed every two years or about every 75,000 to 100,000 miles. If there is a low amount of fluid present in Your system, air will start to circulate through the steering mechanism and if You can hear squealing noises when You turn Your steering wheel then that's a sure sign that Your power steering fluid needs to be replaced.

The manual says that mercon atf is the best for ford escapes, however it is no longer available. Instead, search for a name brand atf that meets the same standards for mercon v.
