The recall notice 15no1 applies to some models of the 2011-2012 Ford Explorer and pertains to faulty steering gears installed as replacements between September 2013 and January 2014. The gears may freeze or lock up preventing the driver from steering, creating hazardous conditions. Owners that are affected are entitled to free replacement of the affected gears. The recall was initiated on January 29, 2014. The Explorer operates through an electronic power assiSTSystem that does not require the use of PS fluid but uses a serpentine belt to help turn the driver's wheel. The NHTSA received 15 complaints that prompted an investigation into more than 83,000 2011 Ford Explorers. Failure happened at low speeds and involved difficulty turning the wheel and a lack of steering power.
