The 2008 Toyota Highlander is not equipped with a power steering fluid reservoir that needs filling. It's powered by an electric motor, an EPS electronic control unit (ECU) and rotation angle and torque sensors located inside the steering column. Steering may suddenly stiffen if the motor fails or become unresponsive if the computer module malfunctions. The Tundra's ECU monitors how much assistance to apply to a driver's turning based on torque and the vehicle's speed. An EPS system can enable other technology like "lane-keep assist", automated lane changing/parking and sense "lane drift" and alignment issues. With an EPS system installed a vehicle operates with less driver input and overall maintenance.
