The S gear in the Ford Escape will stand for Sport Mode setting in the vehicle which will allow You to manually shift the gears via the toggle on the shifter stick. When You have it in Sport mode You can shift up with the + button and then shift down with he "-" button. There are also safety features built into the mode so it will not allow You to go through the gears and cause problems such as shifting to a lower gear in a very high RPM. Once You have assumed manual control with this feature it will remain in the manual mode until You return the gearshift lever from (S) sport back to (D) drive.
