The 2001 Toyota Highlander uses SAE 5W-30 oil. Whenever You need to change it Toyota recommends that You use full synthetic oil. There are two types of oil that are common on the market these days, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is the traditional petroleum-based option that has been around for decades. Synthetic is newer and engineered to give You greater wear protection and longer intervals between changes. This means that You should change synthetic every 7,500 miles compared to 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. I recommend checking Your oil at least once a month. You will want to make sure that it is free from signs of debris and that it is properly filled.

The 2001 Toyota Highlander uses Toyota approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the grade and viscosity. The 2001 Toyota Highlander recommended viscosity is 5W-30.
