The three available engine options are 5w30 or 5w40 in 2004 BMW X5 synthetic oil. For the 3.0l v6 base motor, 7.9 quarts of oil is required. For both the 4.4l v8 engine option and the 4.8l v8 engine option, 8.5 quarts of oil is required. Depending on the brand and consistency, the cost of the oil can range from $5 to 10 and it is advised to use synthetic rather than traditional oil. The conventional oil is cheaper but less powerful as well and needs to be substituted faster than the complete synthetic labels. When using traditional oil and 5000 - 7500 when using synthetic oil in Your engine, You can refill the oil every 3000 - 5000.

The 2008 BMW X5 approved oils belong to the SAE grades 5W-40 and 5W-30. These oils can be used for driving at all outside temperatures. BMW recommends Castrol oil. The 2005 BMW X5 3.0i oil capacity is 6.5 liters and the 48i oil capacity is 8 liters.
